This National Geographic Traveler publication is your best national park guide book for the country’s 62 parks. The ninth edition is dated February 2021 and includes the newest parks, Indiana Dunes, White Sands, and Gateway Arches. As you would expect from any NatGeo publication, the guide is full of gorgeous photography. But it’s also a comprehensive travel guide, with tips to help you navigate, hike, and spot wildlife. There is also a selection of regional road trip planners to help you maximize your time on the road and see the most parks.

The NatGeo Guide shouldn’t be confused with the National Geographic Complete National Parks of the United States. This book is a larger hardcover book, with 544 pages of reference materials and full-color photos. It covers recreation areas, historic sites, monuments, hikes, seashores, and camping options. It has more than just the parks, and it is updated less frequently. Complete National Parks was published for the centennial in 2016.

Luong’s work was featured in the Ken Burns’ documentary The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. Besides the photos, each park includes maps and details on how and where Luong captured the photos. The book includes all 62 parks—as a matter of fact, Luong is the only photographer to have captured large-format images of all of the parks.

The companion book to the Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan 2009 documentary series, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is an excellent book in itself.
