The Rock of Calpe
If you are coming for a vacation to the area in the south east of Spain known as the Costa Blanca, you should consider visiting the city of Calpe which is situated in the northern part of the province of Alicante. The history of Calpe goes back to Roman times and many different civilizations have used the land and the sea around Calpe for their own advantages. These include the Visigoths, the Muslims, and the Christians who reconquered the area in the 13th century.
Most people who come to Calpe these days do so for a vacation. There is so much to do here for the holidaymakers including just lazing on the beach all day underneath the hot Spanish sun. But while you are here you will not be able to avoid seeing the rock of Calpe. The rock of Calpe is known as Pennon de Ifach in Spanish. This magnificent tower of rock rises to over 300 meters into the Spanish galley, you will be able to see it from almost any part of Calpe and especially the beaches.
You can climb to the top of Calpe because the Spaniards have constructed a tunnel in the early 1920s which allowed people to reach the top. Once you get there, you will be able to take in all the magnificent views stretching over the Mediterranean Sea and into the town of Calpe and the surrounding countryside. On a clear Day you can see all the way across to Ibiza. Just one or two warnings, try not to make your ascent of the rock during the hottest part of the day, and you should get down there as early as possible because the local authorities have imposed a restriction on the amount of tourists that they will allow onto the rock at any one time.
Once you have got your feet firmly back on the ground you should try out some of the local Food & Drink. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes along the promenade to you to choose from. Also, you can head up into the old town of Calpe where you will find not only decent Calpe hotels to rest your weary head, but also plenty of traditional Spanish eateries.
