Exploring Sweden

My dream is to spend a summer backpacking Sweden. There is so much undiscovered wilderness to be explored and enjoyed. I probably wouldn’t even spend that much time in the cities and just focus my time in the wilderness. I would love to hike and discover the perfect site to pitch my tent. Just me surrounded by the natural beauty of Sweden.

The last time I had the opportunity to spend time traveling Europe, I wasn’t able to go to Sweden. The extra flights were just out of my budget so I am now saving for my inevitable trip there. I will probably start in Stockholm as many flights land in this capital city. From Stockholm I will have to find a guide to take me into the wilderness. I would like to go alone but I prefer to have a guide when being initiated into a new area. Much of the wilderness is in the Norrland region of Sweden. Norrland is the sparsely populated northern part of the country. There are many lakes and forests to explore with enormous marshes and high mountains. The weather is best in the summer, which is why I’ve set my expected travel date as June 2011. If I’m going to be tenting and hiking I don’t want to be cold.

Just writing this blog post feels like my idea is turning into reality. Yet there is still so much to plan. I have to decide if I will invite a friend to explore along side me. I have to look into exact areas that are interesting to explore but not dangerously so. I should probably review all my hiking and camping gear to make sure it is all still in good shape. If not, those are other things that I will have to save towards. One year seems far away but I don’t think it is ever too early to start dreaming and planning my travels.
